That Amazon Prime Advert And The Christmas Spirit

THE MESSAGE OF LOVE BEHIND THE AMAZON PRIME 2016 COMMERCIAL

It was just this Sunday gone that I ended up having a kitchen-based sermon of sorts….not deliberately mind, but in the sort of wandering way that life sometimes steers us in the direction of deeper revelations.

I had apprehensively dropped off my youngest at Baby Church, nappy-less & all knickered up with a script to boot for the helpers, to facilitate what I hoped would be a seamless continuance of her in-flight potty training.  Thus, I developed a strong urge for a shot of caffeine to steady yours truly in the wake of that not-so-wise decision.

In the comforting space of the nearby church kitchen, I happened upon a conversation I wasn’t so keen to leave. Maybe I needed more than a caffeine boost after all or did I simply want to be within dashing distance should my darling little honeybun proceed to create a bespoke puddle or worse!

Our ramblings led us to watch a clip of the 2016 Amazon Prime Christmas advert currently racking up rave reviews with YouTube views hitting the 1.3M mark! Filmed to the background tunes of Ludovico Einaudi, it tells the story of a lifelong friendship between a Vicar & an Imam (played by real-life practitioners) who meet up for a cuppa and decide to surprise each other with gifts of the same set of knee pads. Grab the tissue box guys! I had to, in small part to save my precious layer of Lancôme ‘Teint Idole Ultra 24H’ foundation. Amazon Prime’s festive advert isn’t all mince pies and Kum-bah-yah; it’s deep and it works the guts! Could just be soppy old me, but this is one of those experiences which keeps on tugging and probing and teaching and then some.

This profound message of unity, compassion (rather than tolerance) and selflessness couldn’t be timelier than in times such as these when we despair over a multitude of overt and covert forms of discrimination, threats of walls being erected, nightmarish protest votes like Brexit creating a variety of huge divides and waves civil unrest sweeping nations across the globe, the most horrifyingly close to home being Southern Cameroon.  By utilising the counsel of the Christian & Muslim Forum, the Church of England and the Muslim Council of Britain, Amazon respectfully tells a compelling and sensitive story in a manner so exquisitely subtle that most viewers would be hard-pressed not to look inwards, dig deep, question and possibly repent of their own prejudices especially in this season’s spirit of giving, not just of material things but also of ourselves.

So here’s wishing you and yours a blissfully insightful and peace-abounding Christmas. And most importantly as to honeybun’s potty training, suffice to say that it is work in tedious progress…
