Sarah Divine Garba heads this incredible label. Without a doubt, Sarah has an unmatched eye for fashion and design. She interprets traditional fashion in a refreshed and refined manner that is feminine yet edgy. Moreover, her designs feature unexpected eye-catching details reminiscent of designers like Jeanne Lanvin who inspire her work. Overall, Sarah designs traditional silhouettes and styles with a mid-century flair that is bound to keep you mesmerized.

The Cameroonian wardrobe essential, the “Kaba Ngondo”, inspired this collection. Remarkably, the interpretation by Maison D’Afie offers the perfect blend of tradition and modernism. The “Ngondo” collection is indeed everything you expect from the talented design house. It is finely tailored, feminine and alluringly elegant.

Kaba Ngondo

The Kaba Ngondo, also known as “Kaba”, is a maxi yoke dress that dates back to the British colonial times in Cameroon (the early 1900s). In the past, the Kaba was typically worn by women from the coastal tribes of Cameroon. However, because of its free-flowing appeal, it is now a wardrobe staple across the country. Every Cameroonian woman owns at least 3 Kabas. If you don’t believe me, try starting a hashtag #seemykaba and you will be amazed! A story for another day…

Definitely, with this collection, Maison D’Afie is well on its path to convert the national appeal for the Kaba into an international appeal. Assuredly, with subtle references to other cultures to help create a global appeal, this collection is a hit! On the whole, it is very relatable and extremely wearable.

Talking about being a hit, the “Ngondo” Collection recently gained an endorsement by Sara Maino of Vogue Italia. Sara is Head of Vogue Talents and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia. When you start being endorsed by fashion giants such as Vogue Italia, then you know you must absolutely be doing something right!

“NGONDO” Cruise 2019

Bear in mind, this collection is exciting because of the stories behind the designs! Maison D’Afie focuses on appealing to its clientele and speaking to their design needs and tastes. This is evident in how wearable the pieces are. Particularly, the “Bunny” dress has a fascinating backstory. It was designed by Sarah’s 5-year-old daughter. No doubt, Sarah fine-tuned the piece given that the original sketch was done by a 5-year-old. That aside, the final masterpiece is chic and demure, appropriate for the office or as a wedding guest.

Meanwhile, the muses for the collection are the many women who consistently shop Maison D’Afie designs. I wish I could be a muse someday! I am planning to stock up on some of these pieces so that I can stand a chance of being a muse too, someday. Pick me next time Maison D’Afie… pretty please. While I daydream and wish for that day to come, please enjoy the “Ngondo” Collection 2018 by Maison D’Afie!
